Denver's first Top 10 hit as a solo artist after a short career performing in small folk music groups comprised of Take Me Home Country Roads written by Bill Danoff. Danoff initially wrote the song by putting Johnny Cash's song in his the back of his mind, however Denver realized from the first time he heard the early versions that the song could be a huge success. Following the performance during a concert in Washington D.C. to a huge crowd, the singer made a recording a few days later.
